U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, and U.S. Representative Jahana Hayes (CT-5), a member of the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, on Thursday introduced legislation to keep guns out of classrooms. The legislation would clarify that the U.S. Department of Education cannot allow school districts to use federal funds for the purpose of arming teachers. Last year, reports indicated that Secretary of Education Besty DeVos would no longer prohibit school districts from using federal funds to purchase firearms or provide firearm training for teachers.
