Washington – U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) today released the following statement regarding the announced resignation of Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatsenyuk:

“We are concerned by the collapse of the governing coalition and the announced resignation of Prime Minister Yatsenyuk. We understand the importance of early parliamentary elections, but we strongly believe that Ukraine’s most immediate priority right now should be defeating the Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, securing the country, and advancing the vital work of domestic and economic reforms. These daunting challenges require national unity among Ukrainians and vigorous U.S. and international support."

“We believe Prime Minister Yatsenyuk has done an exceptional job in leading his country through the current crisis, and since his resignation is not yet finalized, we hope he will be able to remain in his position to see Ukraine through the urgent work ahead. As always, we will continue to do everything we can to ensure that Ukraine receives the U.S. and international support it needs.”
