WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) held a Facebook Live on Wednesday with Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Physician in Chief Dr. Juan Salazar to discuss how coronavirus is affecting children and the challenges parents are facing in Connecticut and answer questions on how families can approach this conversation during the pandemic.
Transcript of Murphy’s opening remarks is below:
“I'm really grateful to have Dr. Salazar here today because, while we certainly know that children interact with this virus, with this pathogen, differently than adults do, there is a really important story to tell, that I will not attempt to tell but I’ll let Dr. Salazar tell, about how children do interact with this virus and their ability to spread to others and the care that's available, should children be infected.
“And then I hope to have a little bit of a broader conversation here about how to interact with children who are right now facing really new stressors due to the closure of their schools, potential sick family members. There's just a lot of new experiences that kids are encountering right now that parents have to be equipped to handle.
“I'm one of the few young parents in the Senate, so as I talk to you on the other side of this computer, sitting across from me the dining room table is my second grader who is right now doing art, so there might be a really nice watercolor to share with you at the end of this presentation.
“I'm learning, I'm learning how to answer questions for my kids and how to make sure that they have a healthy experience at home. And, frankly, there are a lot of parents out there that don't have the resources that my family have, that are struggling with a lot of those questions.”
