WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) reiterated his commitment on Wednesday to passing comprehensive immigration reform that secures our borders, helps law enforcement, and provides a pathway to citizenship that will keep families together and protect undocumented students who were brought here as children. Murphy released the following statement after President Trump signed executive orders ordering construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and withholding funding from cities and states, like Connecticut, that refuse to detain individuals based solely on their immigration status:
“There is nothing more important to my job as Senator than keeping the people of Connecticut safe. But President Trump’s divisive policies that build walls and take money away from local police do nothing to make us safer. America’s greatness is rooted in our immigrant history, and those who try to turn our country against immigrants are preying on the worst kind of prejudice.
“I have worked with Republicans and Democrats to find a comprehensive fix to our broken immigration system that secures our borders, deports criminals, keeps families together and allows people who have worked hard and paid their taxes to come out of the shadows and work toward citizenship. I won’t stop fighting to make that a reality.”
