WASHINGTON – In response to last week’s presentation by Speaker Paul D. Ryan, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, laid out the facts of Trumpcare following the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis with a PowerPoint presentation on Thursday. “There is a three-pronged approach to Trumpcare. CBO says that it’s higher costs and less care in order to finance tax cuts for the rich. Republicans are having a very hard time passing this piece of legislation right now. And there is an alternative. They could set aside this trainwreck of a bill that CBO says will be a disaster for the American public. And instead, they could sit down with Democrats…to try to preserve what works in the Affordable Care Act and to try to fix what doesn’t work. That’s something that could bring the Congress and bring this entire country together,” Murphy said.
“There’s still work that needs to be done in order to make the American health care system better, so let’s come together to do that rather than ripping up the Affordable Care Act,” Murphy added.
Days after the Republican health care bill was unveiled, and after Republican opposition mounted from both conservatives and moderates, Ryan delivered a presentation defending the bill that strayed from the facts. Earlier this week, the CBO announced the plan would cause 24 million Americans to lose health insurance to finance tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy. Murphy has repeatedly called on Congressional Republicans to stop their crusade to repeal the Affordable Care Act and to work in a bipartisan way to improve the law.
