WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement after voting against the Senate Republican budget, which attacks jobs, training programs, health insurance, and other hard-earned benefits and needs of Connecticut residents:

“Here's all you need to know about the Republican budget - it cuts taxes for the richest 5,400 Americans by an average of $3 million a year, and raises taxes on millions of working families by up to $1,100 a year. This budget is a nightmare for middle class families in Connecticut, and that's why I voted against it.

“Time and time again, trickle-down economics has been disproven, but once again Republicans seem intent on gutting funding for education and health care and job training in order to pay for huge tax cuts for the super wealthy. This budget is based on a failed economic model, and instead, we should be pursuing policies that invest in low-income and middle class families - they are the people that are going to grow our economy.

“Moving forward, I will use my new position as a member of the Appropriations Committee to fight for a budget based on middle class economics. And I will continue to press for funding for projects that put Connecticut workers back on the job, like submarine construction and improvements to the Northeast rail system. Those are funding priorities that will pay short-term and long-term dividends for our country's economy."
