WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Monday released the following statement after the Trump administration formally began the process of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement:

“The global climate catastrophe is coming whether we like it or not, and once again President Trump is surrendering U.S. leadership on the global stage. The decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris agreement is catastrophic - there may not be enough time to save the planet now that Trump has made it official that he is going to throw away his entire term and pretend this crisis isn't here. Climate change is not a hoax, and every single day that goes by where we don’t make necessary decisions to save this planet from existential harm is another day closer to the point of no return,” said Murphy.
