HARTFORD — U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism, applauded the Obama administration on Thursday for announcing sanctions against Russian officials, intelligence agencies, and institutions for cyber attacks during the 2016 presidential election. Murphy also called for a bipartisan investigation into Russian interference and for further action, as necessary, to prevent future cyber attacks against the United States.
“I fully support the Obama administration’s decision today to impose sanctions against Russia. Putin's aggression is a direct attack on our democracy and our institutions of government, and the sanctions and expulsions announced today send a strong, clear message that these actions have consequences.
“For years, I’ve listened to my Republican colleagues in the Senate eviscerate President Obama for being too weak on Russia. I encourage them to now work with Democrats to conduct a thorough, bipartisan public investigation into Russia’s interference, and make it clear that the United States will not hesitate to impose additional consequences if their illegal, destabilizing actions continue.”
