WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), the top Democrat on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism, on Friday made the following statement:
“I’m relieved to see that Putin and Erdogan agreed to a ceasefire in Syria. The recent escalation of violence in Idlib has pushed the humanitarian crisis to unprecedented levels, displacing one million Syrian civilians caught in the crossfire. We need to do everything we can to use this respite to surge humanitarian aid. Emergency funding from the U.S. is needed. But this deal still leaves core issues unresolved, and we should recognize that fighting could reignite at any moment,” said Murphy.
Murphy released a statement on the recent escalation of violence in Syria last month. In October after the Turkish offensive in northeastern Syria, Murphy led five U.S. Senators in calling on the U.S. Secretary of State to ensure U.S. resources are made flexible for humanitarian efforts to evacuate personnel and continue assisting Syrian refugees inside Iraq.
