WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on the importance of raising refugee admissions:

“There’s been bipartisan consensus for decades that resettling refugees in America, as has been our proud tradition over the course of our nation’s history, is the right thing to do. I hope President Biden fulfills his promise to raise refugee admissions for this year. We have a moral responsibility to welcome those fleeing persecution and violence, and doing so strengthens our country. But increasing refugee admissions also furthers our nation’s security since a low refugee goal makes it significantly harder for the United States to ask other countries to accept refugees and asylum seekers as a means of relieving pressure in conflict zones. America can resettle refugees and process asylum requests at the same time. I urge the president to raise the refugee admissions goal when he makes his final decision next month, and as Chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee overseeing the Department of Homeland Security, I stand ready to advocate for any additional funding necessary to get this done,” said Murphy.
