WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Wednesday released the following statement on Senate passage of the Congressional Resolution of Disapproval of the Trump administration’s rollback of the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS). Murphy is a cosponsor of the resolution, which reverses the Trump administration’s rollback of methane emissions regulations and reinstates the 2012 and 2016 Oil and Natural Gas NSPS.
“Methane and other super pollutants have devastating effects on our climate, and reinstating regulations on methane emissions from the oil and gas industry is a quick, affordable way to make a big difference,” said Murphy. “But confronting the climate crisis will take more than just reversing the damage already done. We need bold policy that holds polluters accountable and prioritizes a cleaner future. The passage of today’s resolution is hopefully the first of many steps to save our planet.”
On Wednesday, Murphy joined Foreign Policy’s Virtual Climate Summit: Advancing the Global Dialogue on Climate Action for a solution-focused discussion on addressing climate change as a national security priority. In January, Murphy joined a letter urging the Biden administration to restore strong federal methane emission standards for oil and gas production. Murphy also sponsored the Super Pollutants Act of 2019 along with U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) which aims to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants.
