WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement after voting to support the McCain-Feinstein amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, which he cosponsored, that will prohibit the U.S. government from using torture or any other extreme techniques not specified in the Army Field Manual during an interrogation. The amendment passed the Senate by a vote of 78 to 21.
“Over the last century, the United States has become the most powerful nation on earth, not only because of our unmatched economic and military strength, but because of our values. The United States’ determination to stay true to our founding ideals of democracy, justice, freedom and the rule of law have provided a strong foundation for America to be a force for good in a dangerous, unpredictable world. But actions that are inconsistent with our values, such as torture and other disturbing activities detailed in the Senate Torture Report, undermine our credibility and provide recruitment fodder for terrorist groups.
“Like covert wars and illegal domestic surveillance, the use of torture is short-sighted and ultimately harms our national security. This amendment, which I am proud to cosponsor, reaffirms that the United States must never torture. I applaud Senators McCain and Feinstein for taking a strong, principled stand, and I vow to stand alongside them as they continue to stand up for American values.”
