WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism, released the following statement on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit:

“President Biden has rightly moved to strengthen our relationship with India as a geostrategic priority, and Prime Minister Modi’s visit represents a new high water mark for our growing partnership. As the world’s most populous democracy and one of the largest, fastest growing economies, our economic and security relationship with India is increasingly important.

“Connecticut’s large Indian-American community, with whom I am very close, is very encouraged by reports that the Administration will make it easier for Indians to live and work in America by allowing in-country H-1B visa renewals. The administration’s emphasis on this visit reflects the significant, positive impact of Indian-Americans in communities across the United States and to our nation’s cultural fabric.

“The United States’ closest partners are those that share our strategic goals as well as our values. During the Prime Minister’s visit, we have to emphasize the importance of strengthening our democracies by adhering to democratic principles and upholding fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of religion. There should be a place for everyone in India to participate equally in civic and economic life, and I trust President Biden will raise issues surrounding the treatment of Indian Muslims during their discussions.”

Last year, Murphy held a subcommittee hearing with Ranking Member U.S. Senator Todd Young on U.S. policy towards India with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu.
