WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement after voting against the Farm Bill, which the Senate passed by a vote of 68-32. Murphy joined the rest of the Connecticut Congressional delegation in opposing the bill, which is now headed for the President’s desk.
There are things to like and things to dislike in every Farm Bill, and this was a close call for me. Ultimately, however, I couldn’t support a bill that disproportionally cut food stamps compared to the cuts in the bill to wasteful subsidies to agri-business. This program has already suffered massive cuts from Washington, and with too many family budgets in Connecticut already stretched to the breaking point, there’s no reason to make their situation worse.
