WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Tuesday made the following statement on the announcement of a Turkey-Russia deal on Syria:
“This agreement locks in Erdogan’s land grab in Syria and opens the door for further violence against the Syrian people. Not only did Trump green light Erdogan’s invasion and betray our former Kurdish allies, his decisions have made Putin the kingmaker in determining the future of Syria. Trump’s decision to sell out the Kurds has handed a gift to Russia, Assad, ISIS, and Turkey all at once, and this agreement is proof,” said Murphy.
On Thursday, Murphy issued a statement on the announcement of a five-day ceasefire in Turkey. Murphy has also cautioned Congress not to jump to blanket, unilateral sanctions on Turkey in an effort to reverse events on the ground.
