WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) issued the following statement on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to end approval of some chemicals that do tremendous damage to the climate. These chemicals, also known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are “super pollutants” that warm the climate hundreds to thousands of times more effectively than carbon dioxide. They are typically used in air-conditioning systems, refrigeration units, and insulation.
“I’m thrilled that EPA has acted so quickly to employ the Significant New Alternatives Program (SNAP) to phase-out the use of the some of the worst HFC compounds when it comes to climate change. As we work to pursue a strong global agreement under the Montreal Protocol to phase-down HFCs, it is vital that we also demonstrate a strong commitment here at home. President Obama and Administrator McCarthy are to be commended for their bold action on this important issue.”
