HARTFORD – U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement on Wednesday after the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced they will not stay the deportation to Guatemala of Norwalk resident Nury Chavarria that is scheduled for tomorrow. Murphy sent a letter to ICE urging discretion in her case. He, along with U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, called ICE this afternoon to urge delay of any deportation proceeding.

Chavarria is a single mother with four U.S. citizen children, ages 21, 18, 15, and 9. Chavarria works fulltime as a housekeeper.

“I'm heartbroken for the Chavarria family,” said Murphy. “Nury is a hard-worker and the sole caretaker of her four U.S. citizen children. She’s not who we should be focusing our limited law enforcement time and effort on deporting. Trump's backwards immigration policies make us less safe. We're better than this.”
