WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) voted on Friday to confirm General James Mattis as Secretary of Defense and General John Kelly as Secretary of Homeland Security. Murphy released the following statement:

“It’s my hope that Generals Mattis and Kelly draw upon their experience to inject a level of seriousness into President Trump’s administration. One of my concerns going into the transition was the risk of a basic lack of knowledge and experience among the president and his advisors when it comes to the most serious national security challenges we face,” said Murphy. “I expect I’ll have strong differences with the administration when it comes to foreign policy and keeping our country safe. And as much as that concerns me, I think we’d be even worse off without people like Generals Mattis and Kelly in the room.”
