WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security and a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Thursday released the following statement after Vice President Kamala Harris announced the administration’s Root Causes Strategy to address migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

“There is no way to humanely manage crossings at our southern border without addressing the causes of migration. The Biden administration’s Root Causes Strategy is a comprehensive plan to tackle the long-term factors that push families to make the long, treacherous trek to the U.S., like poverty, corruption and human rights violations. I look forward to continuing to work with the vice president and our partners to make the region safer and more economically secure,” said Murphy.

In May, Murphy praised the Biden administration’s announcement to support private investment in the Northern Triangle. Earlier this year, Murphy joined a bipartisan group of U.S. senators and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on a trip to El Paso, Texas, to get an update on the situation at the border, including how government agencies are processing and caring for unaccompanied children. Upon returning, Murphy discussed his trip on the U.S. Senate floor.
