WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released a new report revealing some of the most extreme state legislation that the National Rifle Association (NRA) has pushed in statehouses across the country in recent years.

In a number of states, the NRA has supported extreme legislation that allows guns to be used and carried in unreasonable circumstances. For example, the NRA has supported laws in eight states that allow guns into facilities that serve alcohol, such as bars and sports arenas, and has backed legislation that allows guns in churches—a proposal opposed by the clergy and faith leaders because of the sensitive and emotional nature of religious services.

One of the most extreme examples was a bill to allow an individual to use a gun against a police officer that he or she thinks may be entering a home unlawfully. This bill, which recently became law in Indiana, directly endangers thousands of law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect their communities, and may also make law enforcement officers hesitant to enter a home, which may further endanger innocent victims within.

“The NRA’s bizarre, unhinged behavior has been on full display since the December 14th tragedy in Newtown, but a closer look at their multimillion dollar lobbying efforts in state legislatures across the country reveals some of the most depraved ideas ever submitted to a legislative body,” said Murphy. “The NRA backs legislation that puts the public, and those sworn to protect them, directly in harm’s way. Guns should not be brought into bars and stadiums where alcohol is served, and people should not be allowed to use firearms against a police officer who is trying to protect someone in danger. The NRA’s support for these bills is just more evidence of the organization’s disregard for public safety, and their out of touch leaders in Washington need to be called out for their extreme agenda.”

This is the fourth in a series of reports that Murphy has released on the national gun lobby. Last week, Murphy released a report illustrating that the NRA has shown utter contempt for the will of the American people and even its own members on a number of policy proposals. Most notably, it has argued against universal background checks for gun purchases—a policy supported by 74 percent of NRA members and 87 percent of non-NRA members. Last month, Murphy released a report revealing the vast sums of money funneled to the NRA from firearms manufacturers, which in turn shapes the organization’s lobbying agenda. And a previous report showed the NRA’s ineffective political spending in the 2012 election, winning fewer than 20 percent of the key races it invested in.

Murphy has been an active leader on anti-gun violence initiatives. He recently joined six Members of Congress to introduce the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013, legislation that would ban certain military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Murphy is also an original cosponsor of the Ammunition Background Check Act of 2013, which requires instant background checks for the sale of gun ammunition.
