WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations announced that U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) will serve as a member on five Senate Appropriations Committee subcommittees: the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee; the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee; the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee; the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee; and the Legislative Branch Subcommittee. As a member of these subcommittees, Murphy will help shape legislation that allocates federal funding to numerous government departments and organizations having to do with transportation, housing, foreign policy, commerce, veterans affairs, military basing, and federal law enforcement.
“I fought for a seat on the Appropriations Committee so I could bring more money back to Connecticut to build roads, create jobs, and help the middle class. These subcommittee assignments will put me in a position to fight for projects like the improvement and expansion of MetroNorth, the modernization of our veterans facilities, and increasing the availability of affordable housing. As the first Senator from Connecticut to serve on the Appropriations Committee in a generation, I'm excited to get to work and make sure that Connecticut taxpayers see their hard earned money returned to our state."
The Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies has jurisdiction over the Federal Housing Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness.
The Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related programs determines federal funding for the Department of State, USAID, the Export-Import Bank, the Peace Corps, and other related international programs.
The Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee oversees all aspects of the Departments of Commerce and Justice, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the International Trade Administration, the Bureau of Prisons, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee determines federal funding allocations for all DOD infrastructure projects and for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch oversees funding for the House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and related offices including the Architect of the Capitol, the Capitol Police, and the Government Accountability Office.
