HARTFORD – U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) announced that Nucor Steel Connecticut, Inc. of Wallingford is this week’s “Murphy’s Monday Manufacturer.” Nucor Steel Connecticut uses rolling and forming processes to manufacture a broad range of steel products, including concrete reinforcing bars, hot-rolled bars, rounds, light shapes, structural angles, channels, wire rod, and mesh for the construction, fencing, automotive, fastener, and agriculture industries. The Wallingford manufacturer was acquired by Nucor in May 2006, and it is the only steel production facility in the state of Connecticut. With the help of 165 Wallingford-based employees, Nucor Steel Connecticut produces up to 300,000 tons of wire rod and rebar and an additional 85,000 tons of wire and structural mesh each year. The manufacturer takes pride in the fact that, in 2015, their steel products contained, on average, 99.8% recycled content. Nucor Steel Connecticut is operated by Nucor Corporation, the largest steel producer in the United States.
Nucor Steel Connecticut is committed to its employees. The company actively recruits military veterans and students from Wilcox Technical High School in Meriden and the University of Connecticut. Every Nucor employee and dependent of a Nucor employee is eligible to receive $3,200 per year in scholarship funds to attend college or a vocational school. Additionally, Nucor Steel Connecticut supports the Wallingford Fire and Police Departments and is an annual sponsor of the Spanish Community of Wallingford.
“There’s no question that Nucor Steel Connecticut is committed to manufacturing world-class products,” said Murphy. “But they’re also doing their part to keep Connecticut residents on the job and to help working families make the dream of going to college a reality. I’m proud to recognize Nucor Steel Connecticut as one of our state’s distinct manufacturers.”
“On behalf of all 165 Nucor Steel Connecticut teammates, we are honored to be recognized by Senator Murphy and proud to call Connecticut home. Our team is dedicated to taking care of our customers and producing high-quality steel products here in the U.S. We thank Senator Murphy for being a strong advocate on behalf of the men and women who work in American manufacturing,” said Doug Adams, General Manager of Nucor Steel Connecticut.
The manufacturing industry plays a crucial role throughout Connecticut communities, creating new jobs and accelerating our state’s economic recovery. Today, Connecticut’s 4,602 manufacturers account for 10.2% of the state’s jobs and 87% of the state’s total exports. In order to protect and grow manufacturing jobs in Connecticut, Murphy has introduced two pieces of legislation that aim to strengthen existing standards and prioritize the purchase of American-made goods, the 21st Century Buy American Act and the American Jobs Matter Act.
