HARTFORD–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) announced that Blue Earth Compost, based in Hartford, was named “Innovator of the Month.” Founded in 2013, Blue Earth is a certified B-Corp that makes composting more accessible to homes and businesses to decrease the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills and incinerators. Since its founding, Blue Earth has collected over 34 million pounds of food scraps for regeneration into renewable energy and soil. The company also partners with local schools, non-profits, activist organizations, and church groups to provide composting education and donates compost to local community gardens.
“Connecticut produces more trash than our system can handle, and a lot of that waste is composed of food scraps. Composting is a great solution that cuts down on pollution by turning food waste into nutrient-dense soil. Blue Earth Compost is making sure more families and businesses see composting as an option. They’ve grown a lot these past few years, and I look forward to seeing their continued success,” said Murphy.
“Blue Earth Compost is honored to be recognized by Senator Chris Murphy as Innovator of the Month,” said Alex Williams, CEO and Director of Operations of Blue Earth Compost. “Food waste is a global problem with local solutions and we are proud to provide that solution in Connecticut. From humble beginnings collecting food scraps in the back of an SUV, we are now a full-service food scrap collection company creating a sizable environmental impact and providing good green jobs. We’d have it no other way and are excited to continue growing here in CT.”
Murphy believes entrepreneurship and innovation are the building blocks for a strong economy. In the U.S. Senate, he has introduced legislation to incentivize angel investors to put more money into startup companies—the Angel Tax Credit Act. Startup companies create an average of 2 million jobs each year.
