HARTFORD – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), leader of the Senate Democrats’ #ACAWorks campaign, released the following statement celebrating tomorrow’s five-year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) being signed into law.
“Five years in, it’s clear the Affordable Care Act is doing exactly what it was intended to do. More people have access to care, the number of uninsured is plummeting, and health care is growing at the slowest rate in 50 years. Insurance companies can no longer deny plans to people with pre-existing conditions or charge women more for the same exact policy, and young adults can stay on their parents’ plan until they turn 26.
“In Connecticut, the more than 550,000 people who have enrolled through Access Health CT could fill the UConn’s Gampel Pavilion a staggering 54 times over. Nationwide, more than 16 million have gained coverage because of the law. But these facts are more than just numbers, they represent the 16 million individual stories of friends, neighbors and parents who finally know the freedom and security that come with health insurance.
“The law’s indisputable success is something we should all be celebrating, regardless of political affiliation. Five years of partisan fighting is enough. Americans are tired of us having the same fight over and over, and I am too. The ACA was a great start, but there’s more work to be done. It’s time for Congress to come together in pursuit of even more successes.”
