HARTFORD—Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) continued his “Connecticut in the Capitol” video series: a series of YouTube videos that highlight Connecticut’s historical connections to a variety of places and objects throughout the United States Capitol. In the video released today, Murphy features the statue of Roger Sherman, a Founding Father of the United States. Sherman, a former mayor of New Haven, representative in New Milford, and signatory of all four of our country’s founding documents, created the concept behind the Connecticut Compromise—the agreement that determined that each state would have proportional representation in the House of Representatives, and two representatives in the United States Senate.
The Roger Sherman statue in the Crypt of the U.S. Capitol is one of two statues that represents Connecticut in the Capitol complex. The other statue is of Jonathan Trumbull, a former governor of the state of Connecticut.
