WASHINGTON — As the new year begins, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement on Wednesday in celebration of some of the legislative victories he was able to achieve for Connecticut residents throughout 2016. Murphy’s 2016 legislative accomplishments span a wide range of issues, including comprehensive mental health reforms, job growth, increased access to quality education, progress on gun safety efforts, new investments in medical research and tools to combat opioid addiction, and significant headway on local Connecticut projects.
“I’m so grateful for the honor of being Connecticut's U.S. Senator, and I’m proud of everything we accomplished together last year. 2016 was a busy, tumultuous year. Americans rose up like never before to demand that Congress act to stop the slaughter of victims of gun violence. With the help of Connecticut’s passionate and courageous gun safety activists, I led a 15-hour filibuster and secured important votes on gun safety reforms. We also accomplished a major breakthrough by getting my bipartisan Mental Health Reform Act signed into law. I had heard too many heartbreaking stories from Connecticut families dealing with mental illness and addiction not to act, and I was proud to stand beside President Obama a few weeks ago as he enacted the most comprehensive reforms of our mental health system in decades.
“2017 won't be easy, but I'm going to keep working my tail off to fight for Connecticut families and Connecticut values every single day."
