WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism, released the following statement calling on all Libyan parties to accept the United Nations-brokered peace agreement to establish a unified governing body.
“As parties in Libya review the UN-brokered peace agreement to establish a Government of National Accord, I urge all parties to accept the peace deal by the October 20 deadline. The importance of forming a unity government cannot be overstated. The ongoing conflict between rival political factions and militia groups has resulted in a political vacuum with abysmal economic, security, and humanitarian implications. In the absence of a unified central government, terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Sharia and ISIL continue to gain influence and territory alongside militia groups vying for control. The chaos has also contributed to a growing humanitarian crisis, with an unprecedented number of Libyans risking their lives every day to cross the Mediterranean for safety in Europe.
“A unified Government of National Accord represents an important opportunity for Libyans to come together after years of conflict to rebuild a prosperous, independent nation. Ultimately, it is the only way to achieve political stability, prevent economic collapse, and combat terrorist groups. I therefore call on all involved parties to accept the peace deal, and in the event of an agreement, for the United Sates to provide a range of assistance to support the Government of National Accord.”
