WASHINGTON—U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement after the United States Navy and Electric Boat finalized a multi-year contract for the next block of Virginia-class submarines to be built by General Dynamics Electric Boat in New London.

“The hardworking men and women at Electric Boat continue to prove their ability to build the best submarines in the world. Today’s contract announcement by the Navy that the Block V Virginia-class submarines will be built right here in Groton is great news for the state of Connecticut, and is a testament to our skilled workforce. This new contract will fuel thousands of jobs in our state and provide long-term stability to the thousands of small Connecticut companies that support our defense manufacturing sector. This is a great win for our state,” said Murphy.

“The Block V contract is welcome news for Electric Boat, its suppliers and their thousands of skilled Connecticut workers. The contract is critical for our national security, and just as important the future of highly skilled Connecticut jobs. Electric Boat and its suppliers’ welders, engineers, designers, and others are constantly innovating to make the most advanced submarines on the seas while reducing costs and delivery times. I am committed to fighting on behalf of current and future Connecticut workers, to ensure that the Navy exercises the option to buy a tenth Connecticut-made submarine,” said Blumenthal.
