Hartford, CT)—Today, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and U.S. Representative Jim Himes (CT-4) announced a $1.1 million grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) for Career Resources, Inc. in Bridgeport to administer the Senior Corps Foster Grandparent Program. Career Resources, Inc. will receive $398,078 over three years, totaling $1,194,234.

“Today’s grant to support the Foster Grandparent Program will give more students in Bridgeport access to meaningful mentorships,” said Blumenthal, Murphy, and Himes. “From helping with homework to providing valuable advice, mentors can make an extraordinary difference in a young person’s life. This funding is a testament to Career Resources’ commitment to helping Bridgeport’s youth succeed. We look forward to the positive impact this funding will have on the community.”

Foster Grandparents are experienced and trained volunteers who will tutor and mentor disadvantaged youth in Head Start programs, early childhood education centers, K-12 classrooms, and afterschool programs. With today’s funding, Career Resources, Inc. will engage 67 Foster Grandparent volunteers as mentors for disadvantaged youth in the Bridgeport Public School system.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is the federal agency for volunteering, service, and civic engagement. The agency engages millions of Americans in citizen service through its AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs and leads the nation's volunteering and service efforts.
