WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued the following statements on the U.S. Navy’s announcement that it will be establishing the Undersea Warfighting Development Center at U.S. Naval Submarine Base New London. The new center will support the training and development of Navy forces in advanced tactics, techniques, and procedures of Navy and submarine operations and warfare.

Blumenthal said, “This undersea warfighting center will be the planet’s foremost tactical and training facility – effectively recognizing Connecticut as the submarine capital of the world. The Navy's investment in this new development center will exponentially expand SUBASE New London’s unique military value by bolstering the Navy’s capabilities to detect and defeat undersea adversaries. The advanced aggressive warfighters arriving at this center will complement the able, dedicated sailors already at the sub-base and the skilled workforce producing submarines nearby. I welcome all the officers, sailors and civilians associated with establishing the combat training center to their new home and thank them for their contribution to our national security. The Navy’s continued investment at SUBASE New London speaks volumes about the base’s critical role in our national defense.”

Today’s announcement is a testament to the extraordinary strength of the U.S Naval Submarine Base New London, and it comes as no surprise that Groton continues to be recognized as the best of the best,” said Murphy. “The new Undersea Warfighting Development Center will support key initiatives, enhance our national security and preparedness, and ensure the safety of our brave servicemen and women.”

The New London center will have command authority over two similar centers located in San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA. The establishment of the center expands the mission of SUBASE New London and adds 52 billets, including 14 officers, 19 enlisted sailors, and 19 civilians to support the training of Navy forces in advanced tactics, techniques and procedures for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). The mission of the center includes training and development in advanced Tactics, Techniques and Procedures, operational expertise to support Strike Group Commanders, Numbered Fleet Commanders, Navy Component Commanders and Combatant Commanders, and providing subject matter expertise in ASW to the fleet.
