WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) applauded Senate passage of a resolution they helped to lead designating September 25, 2017 as National Lobster Day.
The resolution recognizes the historic and economic impact of the lobster nationwide. Lobster fishing has served as an economic engine and a family tradition in the United States for centuries, helping to support the livelihoods of thousands of families in the United States through fishing, processing, and shipping. More than 120 million pounds of lobster are caught each year in U.S. waters, representing one of our country’s most valuable catches.
“Lobsters are a key product for Connecticut fishermen and small businesses. This resolution is a fun way to celebrate this heritage, and a good opportunity to continue our bipartisan work to support this uniquely New England industry. We will continue to work with our Connecticut lobstermen to ensure that federal regulations encourage and support this vital industry,” Murphy and Blumenthal said.
The resolution was led by U.S. Senators Angus King (R-Maine) and Susan Collins (R-Maine). Joining Blumenthal and Murphy in co-sponsoring the measure were Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Edward Markey (D-Mass.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
