HARTFORD —U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) today announced the Senate’s unanimous passage of a resolution designating September 25, 2015 as “National Lobster Day”. The resolution will recognize the historic and economic importance of lobster in the United States.
“We hope that this ‘National Lobster Day’ designation will help our lobster industry get the recognition and help it deserves. The lobster industry has made remarkable contributions to Connecticut’s history, culture, and economy, bringing shellfish enthusiasts in from across the country and generating millions of dollars for the state annually,” the senators said. “But the reality is that our lobster stocks are declining rapidly due to poor environmental conditions in Long Island Sound, and Connecticut fisherman and businesses are suffering because of it. For the millions of people who rely on the lobster season for work and enjoyment each year, let’s make ‘National Lobster Day’ about improving the health of the Sound and the critical lobster industry it supports.”
Earlier this summer, Murphy and Blumenthal introduced the Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Act, legislation to secure more federal funding for the restoration and health of the Long Island Sound.
The National Lobster Day resolution was also led by U.S. Senators Angus King (I-Maine), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
