WASHINGTON – The office of U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Tuesday awarded service medals to Vietnam-veteran Stephen Luba at a ceremony at his home in Terryville. Upon returning to the United States from Vietnam in 1966, Luba never received the military medals he earned for his service. Earlier this year, Luba contacted Murphy’s office seeking assistance with obtaining his service medals. A congressional letter was submitted to the National Personnel Record (NPRC) for consideration. Murphy’s office helped secure a National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal and Navy Good Conduct medal, as well as an Honorable Discharge Button and Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation. Luba was also presented with a Certificate of Accomplishment signed by Murphy. The awards were presented to Luba by Murphy’s Veterans Affairs and Military Outreach Assistance Claude Campbell.
“It’s never too late to honor someone’s service to this country. Like many of the men and women in uniform, Stephen served this country selflessly. I am glad he is getting the recognition he deserves, even after all these years. I encourage any Connecticut veterans who has not received the medals and awards they earned through their service to contact my office. We’re always happy to help,” said Murphy.
“When I returned to the United States, I only had three days to discharge, and there wasn’t any time for medals. Years later, I’m glad we’ve found the time. I am very happy to receive these medals and happy for what Senator Murphy and his office have been able to do for me,” said Luba.
