WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, applauded the Biden administration’s decision to end the Trump-era policy known as Migrant Protection Protocols, which forced asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico for removal proceedings.
“I’m glad to see President Biden reverse course on Trump’s ‘remain in Mexico’ policy, which did nothing to address the root causes of migration or effectively manage our border. Ending this cruel and ineffective program shows the world that under President Biden’s leadership America treats migrants humanely, and will not subject asylum seekers to the dangerous conditions they fled in the first place,” said Murphy.
