WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Tuesday released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) announcement of over $231 million dollars funded by Murphy’s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to support the creation and implementation of red flag laws, state crisis intervention court proceedings, and other gun violence reduction initiatives. The funding will support programs in 49 states and territories, and includes nearly $2.5 million for Connecticut.

“A red flag law is one of the best ways to keep guns out of dangerous hands, but lack of funding makes it hard for them to be as effective as they could be. That’s why I made sure the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act included $750 million to improve implementation of laws already on the books while also encouraging new states to adopt them. This is only the first batch of funding to go out, and I’m proud to see these dollars support programs across the country, including in Connecticut, that will undoubtedly save countless lives,” said Murphy.
