WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) joined U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and all 45 Senate Democrats in introducing a Senate resolution recognizing June as LGBTQ Pride Month. The resolution highlights the contributions LGBTQ individuals have made to American society, notes several major milestones in the fight for equal treatment of LGBTQ Americans, and resolves to continue efforts to achieve full equality for LGBTQ individuals.
“We are proud to join all our Democratic colleagues in recognizing June as Pride Month and will continue to stand with LGBTQ people across the country in the fight for equality,” said Blumenthal and Murphy. “During Pride Month, we must acknowledge the extraordinary contributions LGBTQ individuals have made to our nation, while reminding ourselves of the work still to be done in the fight for equal rights for all Americans regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender or religion.”
The resolution was also co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt), Patty Murray (D-Wash), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), Jack Reed (D-R.I), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Benjamin Cardin (D-Md.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Bob Casey (D-Penn.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Michael Bennett (D-Colo.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Angus King (I-Maine), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Gary Peters (D-Mich), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-N.V.), Doug Jones (D-AL), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz) and Jacky Rosen (D-N.V.).
In March, Blumenthal and Murphy joined colleagues in re-introducing the Equality Act, legislation to expand civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The Equality Act would unequivocally ban discrimination in a host of areas, including employment, housing, public accommodations, jury service, access to credit, federal funding assistance, and education.
