WASHINGTON –U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) joined Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and members of the New England congressional delegation on Wednesday in introducing a resolution to congratulate the Boston Red Sox on their 2018 World Series victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The resolution, which recognizes the Red Sox players, coaching staff, and management for their contributions to the team’s historic season, thanks the world champions for their dedication to New England and all of Red Sox Nation.
Joining Senators Murphy, Blumenthal, Warren, and Markey in introducing the resolution are Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Angus King (I-Maine), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), and Susan Collins (R-Maine), along with Representatives Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.), James P. McGovern (D-Mass.) Stephen F. Lynch (D-Mass.), Joseph P. Kennedy III (D-Mass.), Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.).
“I became a diehard Red Sox fan in 1978 and cried myself to sleep the night of Game 6 in 1986. I’ve had a lot of lows as a Red Sox fan, but what an amazing run since 2004. This team had such a dominating season, and I’m proud to honor their incredible World Series win,” said Murphy.
“Not everyone in Connecticut belongs to Red Sox Nation, but we can all agree that the Boston Red Sox had an incredible successful season. Throughout the year, the team demonstrated a sense of deep compassion and caring for their diverse community of fans, including supporting those in Puerto Rico devastated by Hurricane Maria,” said Blumenthal. “Yankees fans are looking forward to next year’s rematch, but in the meantime, I join my colleagues in congratulating the Red Sox for bringing the Pennant back to New England.”
“The Red Sox, who mean so much to the Commonwealth and to our communities throughout New England, have been a symbol of Boston’s strength and resilience for years,” said Warren. “I’m honored every day to represent the people of Massachusetts and the values that we stand for, and I’m especially proud to congratulate the Red Sox organization for an outstanding and historic season. Go Sox!”
“October belongs to the Boston Red Sox, and now names like Mookie and Price and Sale and Cora and Pearce will be forever cemented in the lore of Massachusetts sports history,” said Markey. “The Boston Red Sox dedication to winning starts with players and continues through its manager and ownership, and I am proud of the team’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field. I congratulate them on this world championship season, and celebrate that pitchers and catchers report in just three months!”
