WASHINGTON—Today, just one day before the U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee is set to markup a bill – dubbed the “Denying Americans the Right to Know” (DARK) Act – that will preempt states from mandating labels on foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement reaffirming his support for the mandatory national labeling of products containing GMOs.

“The DARK Act was written to keep consumers in the dark, plain and simple,” said Murphy. “Moms and dads in Connecticut tell me they just want to know what they’re feeding their families. Is there anyone who can reasonably tell concerned parents that they shouldn't know what they’re putting in their childrens’ lunches? It’s this simple principle that drives my continued work for a mandatory GMO labeling bill. And until we get a nationwide policy on GMO labeling, I am thankful that Connecticut companies like Pepperidge Farm are leading the way by supporting efforts to provide consumers with accurate information about what’s in their food.”
