Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy urged Congress to "shed its cowardly cover" and enact laws on gun control after a mass shooting at a church in Texas that left 26 dead.

Murphy, a Democrat and vocal advocate for gun control, blasted lawmakers for failing to pass laws that could prevent tragedies like Sunday's Texas rampage.

"It is uniquely and tragically American," said Murphy in a statement. "As long as our nation chooses to flood the county with dangerous weapons and consciously let those weapons fall into the hands of dangerous people, these killings will not abate."

On Sunday, a gunman opened fire inside a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killing 26, not including the gunman. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said 12 to 14 of the victims were children, and 20 more people were hospitalized.

In his statement, Murphy questioned how lawmakers can claim to respect human life while "choosing fealty" to gunmakers over gun control measures favored by constituents.

"The terrifying fact is that no one is safe so long as Congress chooses to do absolutely nothing in the face of this epidemic," said Murphy. "The time is now for Congress to shed its cowardly cover and do something."

Murphy has advocated for gun control since 2012, following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in his home state that left 20 children and six faculty members dead in Newtown.

Last month, Murphy ripped Congress for inaction following the mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 59.
