Sen. Chris Murphy said he was inspired by Pope Francis’s message to Congress about the need to be good stewards of the earth and to be generous to those in need.

“His humility and courage are an inspiration to all Americans, regardless of faith,” Murphy said in a prepared statement. “He has given a voice to the voiceless and challenged leaders from around the world to confront global challenges head on.”

Pope Francis’s speech to Washington lawmakers on Thursday was the first-ever address by a pontiff to a joint meeting of Congress. He called attention to issues including climate change, poverty and the humanitarian crisis abroad, Murphy said.

“He reminded my colleagues that the United States has a long tradition of providing safe haven to those fleeing persecution and war,” Murphy said. “I took particular note of his admonition that ‘if we want security, let us give security.’”
