FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Con. -- Connecticut Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal joined Senate Democrats on Tuesday in unveiling a major $1 trillion transportation infrastructure investment plan to rebuild America’s roads, rails, bridges, and other critical infrastructure projects over the 10 ten years.

The plan would create 15 million jobs. America’s deteriorating infrastructure already costs the economy close to $200 billion a year.

“President Trump repeated over and over again on the campaign trail that he wants to rebuild our nation’s transportation infrastructure and do it with two simple principles: ‘Buy American and Hire American.’ Well, here’s his chance to make good on that promise,” said Murphy, a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation. “Connecticut families know how badly we need to rebuild our aging roads and bridges and upgrade our public transportation systems to the 21st Century. There’s no time to waste.”

“This is a plan that will grow real jobs, invest in local priorities and reinvigorate our economy,'' Blumenthal said. "It isn’t a Trojan Horse designed to pad the pockets of big banks and businesses while rolling back worker protections and fair wages."

The proposal includes:

•  $210 billion to repair crumbling roads and bridges
•  $180 billion to replace and expand rail and bus systems
•  $65 billion to modernize ports, airports, and waterways
•  $100 billion in new funding to build 21st Century energy infrastructure and upgrade the power grid
•  $75 billion to rebuild schools across the country
•  $20 billion to expand high-speed and affordable broadband access for millions of Americans
•  Pay for the investments by closing corporate tax loopholes
