WASHINGTON D.C. (WTNH) – Two senate democrats, including Connecticut Chris Murphy, have introduced a bill to stop businesses from locking low-wage workers into non-compete contracts. Murphy teamed up with Minnesota Senator Al Franken to sponsor the bill, in response to complaints about Jimmy John restaurants, that have been making workers sign contracts that include non-compete clauses, making it impossible for them to go to a competitor for a higher wage.

The bill is called the Mobility and Opportunity for Vulnerable Employees (MOVE) Act. If passed, the bill would ban the use of non-compete contracts for workers making less than $15 an hour or $31,200 a year. It would also require employers to notify prospective employees that they may be asked to sign a non-compete contract. Murphy and Franken say in most cases, low-wage workers don’t have access to company information that would hurt a company if a worker went to a competitor.
