$3.4m federal grant awarded to New Britain residents who need it most
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Lawmakers gathered in New Britain on Monday to announce a $3.4 million federal grant to address the hazards of lead poisoning in some of the city’s low-income homes.
Representative Esty, and Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal met with Mayor Erin Stewart on Monday to announce sweeping new federal funding for the remediation of almost 400 New Britain homes. Lead hazards will be assessed and addressed in 181 low- and very low-income homes, in addition to 202 others.
Nearly 75% of Connecticut’s homes were built before 1980, which spikes the likelihood of lead contamination in old paint or pipes. Senator Murphy warns about the increased dangers of exposure in the summer months.
“Lead poisoning is always a danger in Connecticut, but the risk spikes in the summer, and we’ve got to do something about it. This grant will give hundreds of New Britain families much-needed peace of mind and safe homes to live in.”
